Punjab Academy of Science
Punjabi University, Patiala – 147002
Ever since the 83rd session of the Indian Science Congress was held at Punjabi University Patiala in January, 1996, the scientists in the region have been inspired to promote science and technology, and to project the contribution of Punjab Scientists at the National and International level. They also took note of the indigenous technological advances to meet the specific needs of the people of our region of Punjab. It is in this context that the idea was floated at Indian Science Congress in 1996, to have a platform where scientists of the region could meet , interact with each other and share their expertise in different disciplines of science and technology.
Punjab, the most prosperous state of India with the highest per capita income and agricultural productivity, is equally progressive industrially in spite of high population density and decennial growth rate. However, fast industrial and development activities are causing environmental concerns. The challenges before scientists of Punjab are to maintain economic and development state through judicious and proper exploitation of natural resources using and managing scientific and our ecological balance. Thus, it is desirable to:
- Foster linkage among scientists, technologists, industrialists and environmentalists for a closer co-operation for the sustainable development of Punjab;
- Have a critical appraisal of scientific and technological requirements of Punjab with reference to academic and applied aspects of science;
- Assess areas and fields, which need emphasis with respect to researches;
- Formulate perspective plans and to decide the fields in basic and applied science keeping in view priorities so as to strengthen socio-economic base
- Work out strategies for sustainable use of our natural resources and malignance of environment.
To achieve these objectives, the Punjab Academy of Sciences was formed in the year 1997. It aims at strengthening and combining the activities of various scientists working in universities, colleges and other institutions in Punjab State. It is registered body under Society Act with more than one thousand Life Members. Under its auspicious, “The Punjab Science Congress is held every year, where large number of scientists meet and present their research papers in different sessions related to different disciplines of science. Under the aegis of this Academy, so for thirteen Congresses have been organised at different places with appropriate themes.”
Under the constitution of the Academy, honorary Fellows are elected every year who have immense contribution to the development of research in various scientific fields and also for those who have worked for promotion of scientific temper in the society. At present there are 72 fellows of the academy.
The Punjab Academy of Sciences also strives to see that matured and young Scientists of Punjab are also able to get the facilities for the best flourishing of their talent so that they could serve Punjab and its people with their scientific researches and expertise and do not have to look for other places. To encourage young scientists, awards are given in different disciplines of science.
The Academy also publishes Journal (Journal Punjab Academy of Sciences), annually of international standard. Academy also engages itself in other activities throughout the year like holding science contest among School Children (rural & urban schools separately), holding of one day seminars/panel discussions, exhibitions for working scientific models among college students; declamation, quiz, painting and debate contests among college & school students and also holding special lectures of eminent scientists and many such activities.
